"The traditional spa town of Barèges could be a Pyrenean version of Chamonix but the challenging skiing and open access of the Pic is more like la Grave." www.pistehors.com
If you dream of leaving a perfect S in virgin, untracked powder then the Pyrenees are the place to be. The French Pyrenees are virtually unknown by the mass ski market, yet there is a vast network of ski resorts set in beautiful, unspoilt country, and huge areas of undeveloped skiable terrain in between the pistes. With a little inside knowledge, after new snow it’s easy to find acres of untouched slopes without having to fight through the crowds or hike for miles.
The decision in 2003 to open the Pic du Midi cable car to skiers has created a mecca for off-piste skiers, with an entirely off-piste descent of over 1000m; from 2877m at the summit, right into the valley bottom at La Mongie.
According to Raymond Cuilhé, mountain guide in the Bagneres de Bigorre valley, "to find the equivalent in the Alps you would have to go to the Aiguille du Midi at Chamonix or the valleys of the Meije in Isere".
This Winter, we’re again offering the following holidays for off-piste skiers and snowboarders:
If you’d like to find out more about skiing in the Pyrenees, the resort, snow out here and whole range of useful and interesting information, please visit our skiing section.
Who is this for?
Off-piste and free ride is about having fun, skiing for the sake of skiing, and getting to places that the crowds will never see. Off-piste is exciting and exhilarating - an adventure but nothing terrifying!
If you’re looking for a bit of a challenge, and something different, get off-piste. Skiing or snowboarding as part of a group, with an experienced, qualified guide, you can feel confident that you are in safe hands. You do not need any previous off-piste experience for this trip, but if you're the one who's always standing at the bottom of the piste twiddling your thumbs, it's probably for you!
What do we see and do?
Taking advantage of the ski lift system, our off-piste ski safari will take you onto barely-tracked snow and stunning untouched valleys.
The wild interior of the mountains can be opened up to strong skiers or boarders who are comfortable on red-runs in all conditions.
Who leads these off-piste safaris?
We use fully qualified, local ski instructors and mountain guides for our off-piste holidays and ski touring. They tailor their instruction and routes to the particular skills and requirements of your group, concentrating on off-piste technique and offering personal tuition. They will plan your daily itinerary according to your level and, of course, the local weather and ski conditions.
We currently offer the following off-piste holidays:
